Whether you’ve visited before or it’s your first time, every experience at The Boston Ivy is subtly different and fresh, thanks to its seasonal menu. Also in Mittagong, this stunning sandstone restaurant and café brings the rich Highlander community together as they locally source their ingredients to create dishes inspired by the Greek and Croatian heritage of the owners, Tess and Uly.
For the perfect place to stop for morning tea, The Shaggy Cow in Mittagong is a great option. It’s multi-award winning and has quality coffee so you can sit back and enjoy while classically trained chef Jared cooks everything for you in-house. We recommend sampling the sourdough breads that are baked onsite daily.
Produced using 100% green and renewable energy, Eden Brewery is an excellent location to tour, particularly if you’re passionate about sustainability, or beer. During a private tour you can test Eden Brewery’s craft beer and stop for lunch. If you visit on the weekend the venue also hosts live music and trivia nights.
Known for its manor houses, antique shops, and gorgeous gardens, Bowral is also where you can pay a visit to the newly expanded Bradman Museum to pay homage to Australia’s best ever batsman. Having been upgraded into a cutting-edge interactive museum and gallery, the Bradman Museum now has launched displays on the global impact of cricket on culture.
After hitting that for six, drive down to Moss Vale for lunch and beer tasting at the Southern Highlands Brewery & Taphouse. Head brewer Cameron James is a born and bred Highlander but travelled the world to hone his craft and knowledge of beer so you can enjoy the brews they have on offer. Plus, they have excellent themed menus for various times of the year like Oktoberfest or the Melbourne Cup.
A must is a visit to the historic village of Berrima, which is recognised as the best-preserved Georgian village on the Australian mainland, where you can stretch out on the one-hour long Berrima River Walk for beautiful views of the river and to learn about the town’s history. Or you can choose the Berrima Heritage Walk in town.
The Minnamurra Rainforest is a must-visit in your Southern Highlands day trip. With everything from rare orchids to cabbage palms, butterflies to the eastern water dragon there’s plenty for the nature lovers. The 1.6km Rainforest Loop Walk around the Jurassic-like landscape takes around 45 minutes to an hour but has viewing platforms to look at the wildlife. If you have time, you can take a detour to The Falls Walk to enjoy views over the lower and upper Minnamurra Falls.
Run by self-proclaimed beer geeks, the flagship Resin Brewery is set on the stunning panoramic NSW coast in Bulli. As a family-friendly gathering space for the local community, this brewpub has also teamed up with wine specialists Carillion Wines to accommodate both beer and wine fanatics alike.
